I'm watching online video and doing music production while scans are made on a 10 year old machine (16 GB and an SSD of course, I'm not crazy)! Then it DOES NOT! Anyone claiming it's using a lot of CPU all the time is simply hysterical. It's true that on OLD machines, like my own 10 year-old MBP, extremely occasionally some functions use a lot of CPU for maybe 30 minutes. Nevertheless I've turned off web protection and Sophos work fine without it. Unlike AVG, it doesn't seem to try to install false certificates and I've heard no stories, again unlike AVG, that they're selling user surf data. Sophos is absolutely great when not downloading malware descriptions and updating its internal database.
